High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

HPGE stands for  High Potential and Gifted students ,  a NSW Department of Education policy and framework to support high-potential and gifted students in public schools.

At Carlton South Public School, we are committed to recognising, nurturing, and extending the talents of all students. Some students demonstrate advanced potential in areas such as intellectual, creative, social–emotional, or physical domains. Our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) approach ensures these students are challenged, inspired, and supported to reach their personal best.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

How do we support high potential learners?

Teachers use a wide range of data to identify and nurture student strengths early. Our goal is to ensure every student is encouraged to think critically, creatively, and with confidence.

We provide a variety of enrichment and extension opportunities across all stages, ensuring learning remains engaging and challenging for every student. Such as:

Differentiated tasks are embedded in classroom programs to stretch learning. Students are encouraged to problem-solve, collaborate, and apply higher-order thinking through purposeful and engaging lessons.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

High potential learning groups

In 2025, we implemented targeted enrichment programs that include:

  • Stage 1 – Maths Explorer: developing mathematical curiosity and problem-solving.
  • Stage 2 – Maths Quest: encouraging creative and strategic thinking in mathematics.
  • Stage 3 – Maths Olympiad: challenging students through advanced reasoning and competition-based problem-solving.

Student voice and creativity

Students also extend their skills beyond the classroom through:

  • The Student Leadership Podcast and SRC Newspaper, providing authentic opportunities for communication, leadership, and media production.
  • STEM and innovation sessions in the library, featuring 3D printing, coding, and film-making projects.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

Wider learning opportunities

Our students are encouraged to participate in a range of state and national writing competitions, as well as external workshops and programs designed to extend learning beyond the classroom. Information about these opportunities is regularly shared with families.
